I wish I could say I took this photo in the tropics—but I didn't. I was taken at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster Colorado. Butterflies are difficult to photograph as they move very quickly, and when they're not moving the image is much less interesting.

The blurred wings of the hovering Morpho have this incredible iridescent cyan coloring. The shades of brown with circles pattern of the Morpho standing on the leaf is what you see when its wings are together. The pattern looks like big scary eyes no doubt to discourage predators. I haven't seen other butterflies with such a difference between the top and bottom of their wings.

I'm not sure but I assume this is some sort of courtship activity going on...
