I'd prefer to find this guy out
in the bush, but he was at Billabong Koala Park near Port Macquarie.
Koalas in the wild are not that easy to spot as they spend much of
their time high up in trees sleeping, and when they're not they don't
make much noise while they munch on gum tree leaves (eucalyptus).
In 1999 I saw my first koalas at Steve 'Crocodile Hunter' Irwin's
Australia Zoo. It was a cute place where you entered through a little
hut full of souvenirs and nick-knacks. Now, (2005) it has parking
for hundreds of cars, tourist buses, security people at the gates,
all with an entrance fee of $34AU. Now Steve is gone, and I've read
about plans to make the place even more commercial. Seems to me when
fame leads to this it is not necessarily progress. |
