“He doesn’t need any money; all he needs is his rucksack with those little plastic bags of dried food and a good pair of shoes and off he goes and enjoys the privileges of a millionaire in surroundings like this.” - Jack Kerouac
Saguaros at White Tanks Park
White Tank Regional Park is northwest of Phoenix. It has a great trail system for both hiking and mountain biking that weaves in and out of saguaros, chollas, and many other indigenous desert plants.

The White Tanks are the mountains in the background; a small, bone-dry range to the west of the trailheads. Springtime is when the park perks up with colorful cactus blooms, but the great thing about the desert is that it's green year-round.

When I first visited the park 15 years ago it seemed only locals from Sun City knew about it. Then it was just several parking lots among the cactus. Now it has an entrance fee, picnic areas, and a well-kept trail system with separate routes for hikers and mountain bikers.
