Connect with nature! I encourage
everyone to get outside and find their own special places, whether
it's a garden in your own backyard, a hike at a park, or even a push
to the summit.
We have a wonderful oceanfront park in my hometown. It has a beach,
dirt trails, and a paved road around the perimeter. I go to the park
to relax, swim in the ocean (in season), take a bike ride, maybe run
a lap or two. I watch how people interact with nature. Some are comfortable
and clearly in their element, but some can't relax; some are in a
rush; some go for a walk or a run—but on the pavement instead
of the adjacent manicured path. Some drive a rushed loop around the
perimeter with windows closed, never stopping to get out and have
a look around.
Don't be that nature disconnected person. You can't appreciate nature
if you go from air-conditioned house, to air-conditioned car, to air-conditioned
office and back each day with no time outdoors. And if you don't connect
with nature you're separated from your origins. Steel, cement, and
glass are our creations, but nature is what creates and sustains life.
After taking many hikes over the last few months, I can confidently
say that I've always felt better at the end than at the start. Hours
sitting behind the computer leave me feeling blah; I get the urge
for fresh air and act upon it. I get outdoors and move. I look around
to see what's going on with nature. It's good to feel something: sun
on skin; wind in your face; rain washing away your stress for a while.
I've never seen a person hiking with a unhappy countenance.
Bring your camera just in case! :) |
