Playing in Colorado Sand Dunes
Great Sand Dunes might be the most unusual National Park I can think of. Sand dunes more than 700ft high in the middle of nowhere! OK, not exactly nowhere, but in south central Colorado.

The dunes are sandwiched between mountains to the north and east, and flatland to the south and west. It's an unlikely location.

Climbing to the top can take an hour or more, but getting back down takes just minutes. You can ski, snowboard, tumble, slide on your butt, or run down with giant strides and no (almost) risk of hurting yourself. Fun!

This is also the only place in Colorado I've seen a bear (so far). The sighting was at night, and he was trying to open a bear-proof garbage can with no luck. I delayed my trip to the nearby rest rooms until he moved on.

Never feed the animals when you visit National Parks!
