The contrast between the old and
new in Egypt is extreme, as is the disparity between the 'haves' and
the 'have nots.' Reminders of the long-gone ancient Egyptian culture
remains along The Nile Valley, punctuated by eroding pyramids for
most of its length. The Islamic influence in modern Cairo is apparent
everywhere, from ubiquitous mosques, to the 'call to prayer' pouring
from loudspeakers five times per day. Carts drawn by mules share the
road with rickety taxis—and the occasional polished Mercedes.
Women covered except for their eyes walk side-by-side with others
in skin-tight jeans. Despite the differences everyone appears to get
along for the most part, except for a few extremists with their pointless
terrorist acts. Fortunately this is rare, and security is taken quite
seriously throughout Egypt.
