"Man fears time; time fears
the pyramids." I have no idea who first said that, but it is
truly impressive that they've held up so well, and were built ~4500
years ago with manual labor. It's a lot o' rocks—and big ones!
How they were constructed is a contentious issue and we'll never know
the details.
Giza is the most famous, most photographed, and busiest of the monuments
along the Nile. The three pyramids are on a small plateau and can
be seen from many parts of Cairo, with the Sphinx at a lower level.
In fact the edge of the city extends right up to the monument with
no buffer zone at all.
It's a busy place with tourists doing their thing, and locals 'in
your face' selling their services and wares. It's not the place to
go for beautiful scenery or solitude. Travel further up the Nile (south)
for that.
I was especially puzzled (and disappointed) when I saw the antenna
atop the great pyramid. The themes of old and new commingle throughout
Cairo. |
