About 30k south of Cairo lies
the Sakkara complex featuring the Zoser step pyramid. It's believed
to be the prototype which evolved into the smooth-sided pyramids we're
more familiar with. Each of the monuments along the Nile has it's
own feel, and on the approach to Sakkara you pass through a dense
oasis of palms and other green plants. It gives a feel for what the
Nile Valley must have been like with seasonal flooding before the
Aswan High Dam was built. Now the green areas exist only with irrigation
as the Nile stays at nearly the same level year-round.
For those who appreciate art, a tour of the Meruruka Tomb should not
be missed. The bas relief artwork is spectacular and original, though
some of the building supporting it has been rebuilt. |
