Approximately 200,000 people,
two-thirds of Iceland's population, live in or near the capital city
of Reykjavik on the southwest side of the island. The city itself
is busy and prosperous with plenty of shopping and cultural attractions,
and it's possible to reach pristine wilderness areas on day-trips
from the city center. There are a few small forests, but the tree's
growth is stunted due to Iceland's proximity to the arctic-circle.
The lack of trees provides plenty of unobstructed vistas, reminding
me of the scenery in Alaska's Denali Park.
This picture was taken about 12 km west of Vik. Take road #218 off
of Route 1, the Ring Road, and head toward the ocean. The dirt road
gets fairly rough but we were able to travel its length without a
4WD vehicle. This shot looks west and is late in the day. |
