Iceland was created by volcanic
activity. The European and North American tectonic plates meet in
Iceland and they've pulled 6 meters apart in just over 20 years! As
a result the land is dotted with many hot-springs and other evidence
of geothermal activity.
Geothermal power provides a significant portion of Iceland's energy
needs. Waterfalls are so numerous in Iceland that they are commonplace.
New hydroelectric projects, such as the K?rahnj?kar Hydroelectric
Project, have brought new aluminum plants to the island due to Iceland's
relatively low electricity costs. These new plants have helped diversify
Iceland's economy beyond fishing. This shot was taken from the Ring
Road east of Vik and is typical of the many roadside waterfalls that
can be seen along the island's southern coast. |
