One of my favorite plants for
its distinctive shape and variety of colors! I have a small garden
with at least a dozen unique colors ranging from white, to pink, to
blue, to purple, to yellow, to red, and several multicolor combinations.
I photographed this one the morning it was opening. It's a pastel-colored
hybrid from an original plant that was dark red with bright yellow
petals.
Columbines are the state flower of Colorado,
but can be found in the wild at many other, mainly northern locations.
Each flower makes dozens of tiny black seeds that are easily harvested.
The plants usually come up for several years, but then disappear.
It's not a problem though, as with so many seeds they're prolific
with new seedlings each spring. The first season a Columbine is just
a mass of clover-like leaves, but if all goes well, the second season
it will send up fast-growing shoots with many flowers. |
