Looking west down the canyon you
can see the Colorado River in this shot. You can also clearly see
the varied levels of strata that allow the different rates of erosion.
The hardest rock remains longest, while the softer rock washes away
more slowly.
In the early days of was was to be the Grand Canyon, the river was
at rim level. As material washed away over millions of years the canyon
got deeper and deeper. Now the river is running through tough igneous
rock and the erosion has slowed or stopped.
The sides of the canyon are still eroding, but now at a much slower
rate as only rain, snow, and wind are doing the work. |
