Conditions have to be just right for the mushrooms to pop up. It has to be relatively warm following a few days of rain and humid weather, then the mushrooms make their appearance and only thrive for a day or two. With too much heat or direct sun they can't survive.

Greenwich Point has a few perfect places for mushrooms that are shaded and moist with soil that has lot of organic material. These wood chips help the soil hold moisture. When the conditions are right the mushrooms sprout and grow very fast; overnight an empty patch can be covered. This healthy specimen is about 4-5 inches across.
