“Real flowers bloom in the wilderness.” - from the movie: “House of Flying Daggers.”
This plant is along the Boynton Canyon Trail in Sedona Arizona. It's a great out-and-back hike except for the unfortunate first stretch past the Enchantment Resort with its do not enter warnings.

Along the trail you hike through shoulder high stands of manzanita growing on a sandy wash. Then as the canyon gets narrower and collects more water, the vegetation turns to tall trees. The trail culminates in a box canyon where you can climb a couple hundred feet for a great view. I made the hike on a weekday and was not alone on the trail.

I've seen manzanita plants in a variety of other locations, including not as arid climates such as Lake Tahoe at 7000 feet. The colors are distinctive with dark reddish brown stem and branches, topped-off with bright green leaves.
