“Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you." - Maori Proverb
New Zealand is one big National Park with a few cities to keep the people busy when they're not 'tramping' (New Zealander [Kiwi] term for hiking). It's a great place for people who like to be outdoors, and the variety of terrain is incredible. New Zealand's North and South Islands are surrounded by ocean of course, but also have fjords, rain forest, arid inland regions, glaciers, even the "Southern Alps."

The tramping is fabulous. Throughout the country there's a system of 'tracks' with overnight huts for multi-day hikes. Choose from routes that are well-traveled—or be the only tramper out there; it's your choice.
