"They have worries, they're counting the miles, they're thinking about where to sleep tonight, how much money for gas, the weather, how they'll get there—and all the time they'll get there anyway, you see." - Jack Kerouac, On the Road
Ever watch the movie "Forest Gump?" This is the exact spot where Forest stopped his cross-country run following the death of his wife. Forest ran for 3 years, 2 months, 14 days, and 16 hours, then just stopped. Surrounded by followers seeking spiritual inspiration he breaks his silence and says: "I'm pretty tired—I think I'll go home now."

It's the northern approach to Monument Valley near the Utah/Arizona border. The area is entirely within Navajo Territory, and park administration is by The Navajo.

It is not a US National Park, but interesting for a day stop. Monument Valley has been the backdrop for many a western film through the years. The unique 'mitten' rock formations are a familiar icon of the southwest US.
