“He doesn’t need any money; all he needs is his rucksack with those little plastic bags of dried food and a good pair of shoes and off he goes and enjoys the privileges of a millionaire in surroundings like this.” - Jack Kerouac
This is not the top, but as high as you can ascend Bell Rock without technical climbing equipment. These hikers sit on a precarious perch about two-thirds of the way to the top. Getting to this spot requires 'scrambling' skill; the use of both legs and arms to pull yourself up in places. It also requires no fear of heights!

It doesn't take long to climb to this level but there are only a few spots on the massive rock where you can get foot and hand holds. So as you climb up you need to memorize your route to get back down exactly the same way.

As it was getting dark I watched some climbers still halfway up the rock trying to figure out how to get back down. Eventually they made it just as total darkness overcame them.
