My former 'athletic' life as a
bike racer is just a blur—accelerating out of corners, lap after
lap. Bike racing success requires speed, endurance, bike handling
skill, a tactical sense, and patience.
Riding in a peloton (pack) is like driving in a bumper-to-bumper traffic
jam at highway speeds.
You have to be aware of what's happening with the course and the riders
around you while you hold your position in the pack. Crashes happen,
so you need quick reflexes and a calm attitude.
As this action takes place you have to consider flow of the race—challenges
of the course, team tactic dynamics, individual rider's capabilities,
distance left. It keeps the mind busy as the body works near redline. |
