“He doesn’t need any money; all he needs is his rucksack with those little plastic bags of dried food and a good pair of shoes and off he goes and enjoys the privileges of a millionaire in surroundings like this.” - Jack Kerouac
Cables assist almost all of visitors over the last 400 vertical feet to the summit of Half-Dome.

Half-Dome stands at 8,836 feet, which puts it approximately 4,800 feet and an 8.5 mile trek above the valley floor.

Considering thousands of people climb Half-Dome each year, it is amazing there are not more fatalities, due to both falls and lightening.

According to Wikipedia from 1971 through August 2007, there have been nine fatal falls from the cables. In addition, on July 27, 1985, five hikers were struck by lightning, resulting in two fatalities.
